the problem

Over the past decade, the Houston metro region has become a major force in driving progressive political change. Despite—and perhaps because of this progress—Texas state leaders have escalated a war against Houston, depriving Harris County’s residents of their ability to govern and represent their own communities and neighborhoods.

We aim to change that.

who we are

New Economy for Working Houston (NEW Houston) brings together the power of grassroots organizing and public policy innovation to win a just economy for Gulf Coast working families. We seek to build an inclusive regional economy where workers and neighborhoods thrive, and where people of color, immigrants, women, and low-income residents have an equal voice and share equally in regional prosperity.

Creating Equal Opportunities:

a Vision for Regional Prosperity

NEW Houston supports labor and community organizations by conducting research, shaping policies, and advocating for campaigns to improve the lives of working families through local government.

Our goal is to better inform public conversation about the success Harris County is achieving to transform our economy through:

  • worker-first policies,

  • improve justice and public safety,

  • and innovative governance.
